Michael Carrick is the front-runner for the Manchester United caretaker position
Talks with Michael Carrick have advanced, according to sources, as United hopes to schedule an appointment before the players resume training.
Sources close to the process claim that Michael Carrick has emerged as the front-runner to be named Manchester United’s interim head coach after Ruben Amorim was fired.
Discussions with the 44-year-old former midfielder have advanced, but a final decision has not yet been reached. It is said that United’s management is eager to have a stand-in before players resume training on Wednesday.
Prior to this, Carrick managed three games as United’s interim manager in 2021 following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. After Ralf Rangnick was named temporary manager, he resigned after winning two games and drawing one during that time.
According to reports, Solskjaer had in-person talks with the club on Saturday about a potential comeback, even though Carrick is currently the front-runner for the interim position.
Amorim left United on January 5th, having led the team for 14 months. Darren Fletcher, a former midfielder for Scotland and United, was temporarily given command of first team matters after his departure.
Fletcher guided United to a Premier League draw with Burnley last Wednesday, but on Sunday, his team was ousted by Brighton from the FA Cup third round, which is likely to be his last game as manager.
After leaving Tottenham to join Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson, Carrick had a fairly successful playing career there, recording 464 appearances between 2006 and 2018. After retiring, he immediately went into coaching. At the end of the 2017–18 season, he joined Jose Mourinho’s backroom staff, and he went on to coach the first team for the duration of Solskjaer’s 168-match stint.
The former England international, who had been in charge for two and a half years, was fired by Championship team Middlesbrough in June of last year. While he was at the Riverside, Carrick led Boro to the 2022–2023 Championship play-offs, where they were defeated by Coventry City in the semifinals.
Carrick lost his job after Middlesbrough narrowly missed out on a top six finish in back-to-back seasons. Even though Carrick lacks Solskjaer’s managing experience, his familiarity with the team and his previous stint as caretaker have put him in a strong position as United looks for temporary stability.
