Today, the 25-year-old rapper, born Divine Ikubor, was spotted strolling around places he knew from his childhood in Benin City, Edo State. Rema paused to snap pictures outside of homes he had previously visited, and he struck up conversations and welcomes with neighbors who instantly recognized him.
Videos of locals congregating around the musician were circulated online as word of his arrival spread, and scenes of excitement could be seen all over the place. “POV: You saw Rema in your church on a random Sunday!” was written by a fan who filmed the scene during a church service in one of the videos that went viral on social media.
Rema was also seen going to church with his mother, when his presence caused the crowded congregation to murmur and show signs of excitement. Later, when video from the day kept making the rounds on the internet, the service became a topic of discussion.
Supporters and onlookers commended the artist for retaining strong relationships with people from his early years and for roaming freely throughout the region without much security. His ties to Benin City were further demonstrated by some who cited allusions in his songs, such as lyrics by the Benin Boys.
