Algeria is under investigation by CAF for misbehavior

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has formally initiated investigations into the troubling events that transpired after the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 quarterfinal match between Algeria and Nigeria.

On Sunday, CAF issued a statement confirming that a number of Algerian players and technical staff confronted match officials right after the final whistle, voicing their objections to the decisions made during the crucial match.

The situation allegedly intensified when certain members of the Algerian contingent pursued the referees into the tunnel — an act that CAF deemed “unacceptable” and a blatant breach of the competition’s disciplinary regulations.

In addition to the clash with officials, CAF has disclosed that it is examining reports of conflicts involving journalists and other media representatives following the match, as tensions extended beyond the playing field.

The governing body observed that such behavior compromises the principles of professionalism and respect anticipated at a significant continental tournament.

The thrilling moments unfolded after Nigeria’s Super Eagles achieved a decisive 2-0 win against Algeria in Marrakech, a result that guaranteed Nigeria a spot in the AFCON 2025 semi-finals and sparked strong reactions from the Algerian side.

The CAF has confirmed that a thorough investigation is currently in progress, with all match reports, referee submissions, and video evidence being meticulously reviewed to determine the complete context of the incidents.

The continental football organization also indicated that suitable disciplinary actions will be announced after the investigation is complete, cautioning that any verified violations of regulations will be addressed according to CAF statutes.

This recent development contributes to the increasing controversies surrounding the Algeria vs Nigeria quarterfinal, overshadowing what was otherwise a pivotal stage of the tournament as AFCON 2025 approaches its critical rounds.
