Protests break out in Minneapolis after a woman is fatally shot by an ICE agent
Minneapolis residents demonstrate following the shooting death of Renee Good by an ICE agent, which sparks nationwide discussion and vigils.
The shooting death of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent has prompted protests from Minneapolis residents in the streets. Around 10:25 a.m. on Wednesday, the incident happened, igniting vigils and national attention.
Videos showing ICE officers approaching Good’s car in the middle of the road are making the rounds on the internet. One agent shot the driver several times as her automobile tried to move. The shooting’s cause has been described in conflicting ways by officials and local authorities.
Good was accused of “stalking and impeding” authorities by US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who also claimed that she attempted to “weaponize her vehicle” in an act she referred to as “domestic terrorism.” The Minneapolis City Council, on the other hand, said that Good was shot while “caring for her neighbors.” ICE agents should leave the city, according to Mayor Jacob Frey, who stated the officer acted carelessly.
Hundreds of ICE agents have been sent to Minneapolis as part of a larger crackdown on illegal immigration in response to the massacre. While Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has criticized government intervention at the site and demanded a “full, fair, and expeditious investigation,” the FBI is still looking into the incident.
Protests against immigration enforcement tactics and federal officials’ use of force have escalated since Renee Good’s murder. Residents of several US cities have staged vigils and protests, calling on government officials to be held accountable and provide more detailed answers.
Good was obstructing the road when federal officials approached her, according to Minneapolis police chief Brian O’Hara, and she started to drive away just before gunfire. While critics, including Democratic senators like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have denounced the shooting as a “public murder,” President Donald Trump and other government officials have supported the ICE officer’s actions as self-defense.
The National Guard has been put on standby while protests continue, and the events are still being disputed by the city, state, and federal authorities.
