A woman is fatally shot by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, and officials argue over the claim of self-defense

Protests follow a deadly shooting by a US immigration official in Minneapolis, as local authorities contest federal claims of self-defense.

A 37-year-old woman was shot and killed by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis, sparking public indignation and a heated argument between local authorities and the Trump administration on the circumstances surrounding her murder.

The victim, identified by the Department of Homeland Security as Renee Nicole Good, allegedly tried to run over federal officials during an enforcement operation, resulting in what it said was defensive gunfire. The incident was classified as an act of “domestic terrorism” by federal officials.

That allegation was denied by Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who demanded that ICE leave the city and accused the agent of using force carelessly. During a tearful press conference, Frey declared, “This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying.”

Social media videos show Good being confronted by ICE agents while she was sitting in a maroon SUV obstructing a residential street. An agent fired several bullets as she tried to flee, causing the automobile to collide with a parked vehicle. It’s unclear from the video whether any officers were hit.

President Donald Trump accused the “radical left” of increasing threats against federal officials and said that an ICE agent had been “viciously run over.” According to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Good attempted to “weaponize her vehicle,” which led to the agent’s termination.

Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota promised a thorough, independent probe and denounced the government narrative as “propaganda.” The FBI has acknowledged that it is looking into the incident.

According to the Minneapolis City Council, Good was not a threat at the time because he was assisting neighbors. Later, demonstrators gathered all across the city to demand that ICE be held accountable for the shooting and withdraw.

Tensions over policing and federal enforcement in the community were rekindled by the incident, which took place only one mile from the scene of George Floyd’s 2020 murder. Due to safety concerns, Minneapolis Public Schools canceled school for the remainder of the week.

As part of a larger immigration enforcement operation by the Trump administration, ICE has sent hundreds of agents to Minneapolis in recent weeks. According to municipal authorities, this action has increased tensions and destabilized communities.
