Manchester United Dismiss Ruben Amorim Darren Fletcher Appointed Interim Manager Following Board Dispute
Manchester United has dismissed Ruben Amorim following a public outburst and has appointed Darren Fletcher as interim manager as the club aims for a stronger finish in the Premier League.
Manchester United have announced the departure of Ruben Amorim as Head Coach, marking a sudden conclusion to his 14-month tenure at Old Trafford due to a significant breakdown in relations with the club’s hierarchy.
On Monday, the club announced: “Ruben Amorim has left his position as Head Coach of Manchester United.” The statement noted that Amorim, appointed in November 2024, “guided the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.”
Although United is currently positioned sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has indicated that a change is essential. “With Manchester United positioned sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has made the difficult decision that it is the appropriate moment to implement a change,” the statement indicated, emphasizing that this move would “provide the team with the best chance for the highest possible Premier League finish.”
Amorim’s dismissal comes after an impressive post-match press conference following Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Leeds, during which he candidly questioned the club’s structure and authority. When questioned about his relationship with the board, he responded: “Guys, let’s put an end to that, and I’ve observed that you’ve been given selective information regarding everything.” I arrived with the intention of being the manager of Manchester United, rather than taking on the role of coach for the team. That is evident.
He stated, “I’m not going to quit.” I will continue to perform my duties until the other person arrives to take my place.
The Athletic reported that United responded promptly to the comments, terminating Amorim’s tenure in under 24 hours. He departs with a record of 24 wins from 63 matches in charge, following a challenging debut season that saw a 15th place finish in the league and a loss to Tottenham in the Europa League final.
Tensions had been escalating for weeks, as Amorim openly voiced his dissatisfaction regarding the transfer strategy and the constraints of the squad. On Christmas Eve, he acknowledged: “I sense that to execute a flawless 3-4-3 formation, we will require significant financial investment and ample time.” I’m beginning to realize that this may not come to fruition, so perhaps I need to adjust my approach.
Manchester United expressed gratitude, stating: “The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.” Darren Fletcher will lead the team for Wednesday’s Premier League match against Burnley as the search for a permanent successor commences.
