President Trump steps up nationwide immigration raids, federal agents detain 130 people in Charlotte
In Charlotte, US Federal agents conducted extensive immigration raids, resulting in the arrest of 130 individuals, which ignited protests and drew criticism from local officials.
Federal authorities have apprehended 130 individuals in Charlotte, North Carolina, as part of a two-day immigration operation mandated by President Donald Trump’s escalating enforcement measures, as confirmed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Tricia McLaughlin, DHS assistant secretary, stated that many of those detained were criminals and gang members; however, local officials contend that the operation has instigated fear, unrest, and unwarranted confrontation within the community.
The agency revealed that a US citizen reportedly collided with a law-enforcement vehicle, resulting in injuries to an officer during the arrest attempt by agents.
Charlotte, a city significantly smaller than Los Angeles and Chicago, has emerged as the latest target of what federal officials are calling “Operation Charlotte’s Web,” a name that has been consistently highlighted online by border official Greg Bovino. Officials report that 81 arrests took place in just a five-hour span on Saturday.
DHS reports that a minimum of two gang members were apprehended, with others having previous convictions that include assault on law enforcement, driving while intoxicated, document tampering, and theft.
The raids have provoked a strong response. Over the weekend, hundreds of residents in Charlotte took to the streets in protest, denouncing what they characterized as aggressive tactics that jeopardize public safety instead of improving it.
Vi Lyles, the Democratic mayor of Charlotte, cautioned that the city’s residents are experiencing feelings of being “threatened” and “destabilised” due to the abrupt federal presence.
“I have significant concerns regarding several of the videos I’ve observed,” she stated. “To all those in Charlotte experiencing anxiety or fear: you are not alone.” Your city is here for you.
North Carolina Governor Josh Stein condemned the sweep, alleging that the agents engaged in racial profiling of citizens.
“We’ve observed masked, heavily armed agents in paramilitary attire operating unmarked vehicles, targeting American citizens based on their skin color and apprehending random individuals in parking lots,” Stein stated. “This does not enhance our safety.”
Concerns about detention led numerous migrants in the city to remain indoors, reflecting a trend observed throughout the US during times of increased immigration enforcement.
On Sunday, DHS released video footage depicting a white van being pursued by police vehicles following allegations that the driver directed the vehicle toward officers. The driver allegedly collided with patrol cars prior to being taken into custody.
Federal officials have not revealed the duration of the Charlotte operation. Chicago’s ongoing crackdown, initiated in September, continues to be in effect.
The intensified enforcement initiative during Trump’s administration has transformed immigration policing nationwide, impacting both major cities and smaller towns and suburbs. Observations from a recent BBC visit to the US-Mexico border indicate that there has been a significant decrease in illegal border entries.
