Vinicius Jr. causes a new scandal after a contentious Getafe collision
Real Madrid was in the news again following a dramatic 1-0 victory against Getafe that included another Vinicius Jr. incident. In the 80th minute, Kylian Mbappé’s goal settled the game, as the Azulones ended up with nine men.
Shortly after his arrival, Allan Nyom was thrown off for a fight with Vinicius Jr., which caused tensions to skyrocket. Infuriated by the ruling, Getafe charged that the referee was biased and had fallen “into Real Madrid’s trap.” Coach Pepe Bordalás and the players denounced what they considered a “excessive” red card, saying the Brazilian made too much contact and swayed the referee’s decision.
Vinicius did not serve to defuse the situation after Nyom was fired. He sarcastically congratulated Bordalás on his substitution, perhaps mocking him, which caused the Getafe coach to react sharply. “He came to provoke, not to congratulate me,” Bordalás remarked after the game.
Juan Iglesias, one of the Getafe defenders, told the winger, “That’s why everyone hates you,” after they had a series of altercations. Spain is still split about the 24-year-old’s temperament despite his obvious potential. The three points were won by Real Madrid once more, but Vinicius Jr. made headlines for all the wrong reasons.
