Man United defeats Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield thanks to Maguire’s late header

Manchester United ended their nine-year league winless streak at Anfield with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Liverpool thanks to a late header from Harry Maguire.

Harry Maguire’s late header gave Manchester United a 2-1 victory over Premier League champions Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, one of their most memorable games in recent memory.

The result gave Rúben Amorim his largest win since taking over, and it was United’s first league victory at Anfield since 2016.

Bryan Mbeumo gave United the ideal start by grabbing hold of Amad Diallo’s deft pass and shooting past Alisson Becker just one minute into the game, shocking the home crowd. In response, Liverpool applied constant pressure, controlling the ball and making several excellent saves against Senne Lammens, United’s new goalie.

After a sweeping play that broke past United’s defense, Cody Gakpo leveled the score with a calm finish in the 78th minute, demonstrating Liverpool’s perseverance. The game was far from finished, but the equalizer gave the home crowd new hope.

United delivered the game-ending punch just six minutes later. Amorim’s team won all three points when Maguire, who had risen highest from a cross from Bruno Fernandes, hammered a header into the bottom corner to hush Anfield and give United the lead again.

The outcome demonstrated United’s increasing tenacity and self-assurance under Amorim, as his squad defended resolutely in the closing minutes to hold onto their advantage.

Despite having 63 percent of the ball and creating many chances, Liverpool’s loss prolongs their worst domestic run since 2014.

The triumph on Sunday not only boosts United’s spirits but also shows that Amorim’s Old Trafford reconstruction project is starting to pay off.

With concerns growing about their form and finishing, Liverpool will need to get back together fast if they hope to salvage their championship defense.

With the confidence gained from defeating Anfield, United will next take on Brighton at Old Trafford, while Liverpool will try to recover when they visit Brentford the following weekend.
