Kane scores and assists as Bayern ends Dortmund’s winning streak with a 2-1 victory
Champions Bayern Munich defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the Bundesliga’s Klassiker on Saturday to continue their undefeated start to the season with their seventh consecutive victory, thanks in part to goals from Harry Kane and assists on another.
The Bavarians, who host Club Brugge in the Champions League on Wednesday, had to withstand a lot of pressure from the visitors in the second half before securing their 11th victory in 11 games this season across all competitions.
With 21 points, they are five points clear of RB Leipzig, who are in second place in the Bundesliga. On 14, Dortmund fell to fourth place after suffering their first defeat in ten games across all competitions.
With his 363rd Bundesliga triumph, the victory also gave Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer a new record for the most league victories.
“The first half was nearly flawless. At a press conference, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany stated, “We could have scored two or three more goals.”
“Congratulations to Borussia Dortmund in the second half. They were combative and violent. However, you must remain dangerous during the challenging times as well. We had opportunities when we did that.
Kompany went on to say that the league table didn’t interest him.
Tomorrow is the beginning of everything, and we must once more get better. That’s all I’m thinking about. The boys are focused on winning every game, not on points either,” he remarked.
Player of the match In the 22nd minute, Kane’s looping header from a Kimmich corner gave the home team a well-earned lead and his 12th league goal in seven games. In 14 club and national team appearances so far this season, he has now scored 22 goals.
Dortmund was not there in the first half but attempted to rally after the interval, coming near through Felix Nmecha before Karim Adeyemi shot over the crossbar in the 67th minute. Dortmund will play FC Copenhagen in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Luis Diaz cut into the Dortmund box after England captain Kane, who scored twice in his team’s 5-0 victory against Latvia on Tuesday to guarantee their spot in the World Cup next year, made a spectacular 60-meter pass.
In the 79th minute, Michael Olise finished the move after Dortmund’s Jobe Bellingham wasted too much time attempting to clear the ball.
Five minutes later, Julian Brandt’s tap-in gave the visitors a goal back, and they increased the pressure to add excitement to the game in the closing minutes.
“The face we intended to display was in the second half. “They dominated us completely in the first half,” Niko Kovac, the coach of Dortmund, remarked.
