Press retires after winning the World Cup twice

Christen Press will retire at the end of the NWSL season, her club, Angel City, announced on Wednesday. She will be remembered as one of the most productive and tough players in U.S. history.

With 155 international caps and 64 goals, the 36-year-old is one of the United States’ all-time top scorers. She was a key member of the U.S. national team’s current golden age, along with Carli Lloyd and Megan Rapinoe.

The 2021 Olympic bronze medalist for the U.S. team, Press, said, “It’s hard to find the words to say goodbye to a sport that has defined my life for more than 30 years.”

The game of football has given me so much, and I will miss being on the field so much. “I want to thank my family, friends, teammates, coaches, and community for taking me on this wonderful journey.”

After tearing her anterior cruciate ligament in June 2022 and missing more than two years of play while she healed from multiple surgeries, it looked like the end of her career.

In what she called a “back from the dead” job comeback, she got back to work in late 2024.

“I won’t leave this game thinking I was ever the best player in the world,” Press wrote on Instagram. “But I will leave feeling like I was one of the most loved.”
