South Africa defeats Rwanda to earn a spot in the 2026 World Cup
South Africa’s Bafana Bafana beat Rwanda 3-0 on Tuesday, October 14, in front of a full Mbumbelanga Stadium. This meant that they would be going to the World Cup 2026 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
This easy win was enough for Hugo Broos’s team to finish first in Group C with 18 points, one point ahead of Nigeria and Benin, who both had 17 points.
When the Super Eagles beat Benin 4-0, star shooter Victor Osimhen scored all four goals. This put the Super Eagles in second place. Based on goal difference, the second team fell to third place.
It was Bafana Bafana who played better at Mbombela Stadium. Orlando Pirates players Thalente Mbatha and Oswin Appollis scored the first two goals, in the fifth and 26th minutes, giving the home team a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Signs of In the 72nd minute, Makgopa scored the third goal by beating Fiacre Ntwari to the ball. South Africa was on a roll, which made the home fans go crazy because they knew that a win for Nigeria would be enough for them to qualify. The Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper was unable to pull it out.
Nigeria failed to qualify for the World Cup for the second year in a row. South Africa, on the other hand, will be playing in the event for the first time since they hosted it in 2010, even though they didn’t make it past the group stage.
Before that, they competed in France in 1998 and Korea-Japan in 2002, with a 17th-place finish being their best ever.
South Africa’s chances of qualifying were in real danger when FIFA fined them $10,000 and took away three points because they played a player who had already been suspended in their 1-0 win over Lesotho in March.
They fell to second place in Group C with 14 points because of the charges, while Benin moved ahead to first place on goal difference. Things got even worse when they were held to a scoreless draw with Zimbabwe. With a 1-0 win in Kigali, Benin opened up a two-point lead at the top before their last away game against Nigeria in Uyo.
South Africa needed to beat both Rwanda and Benin in order to have a chance at the World Cup. And that’s exactly what happened on the last day of the game.
With 18 out of 30 possible points, the Bafana Bafana showed how consistent and responsible they were in a qualifying zone where every game was important.
On the other hand, Rwanda was already out of the running for a spot in the World Cup after losing to Benin at home on Friday.
