Zimbabwe’s 10-Man Team Holds Bafana Bafana in a World Cup Qualifier

Zimbabwe’s 10-man defense kept Bafana Bafana to a goalless draw, hurting their chances of winning the World Cup.

South Africa’s dreams of making it to the 2026 FIFA World Cup were dashed Thursday night after 10-man Zimbabwe held Bafana Bafana to a disappointing goalless draw.

In front of an eager home crowd, midfielder Sphephelo Sithole made his comeback for the national team in the match. He hadn’t played since September of last year due to an injury layoff.

By stretching the Warriors’ defense with the speed of Mohau Nkota and Oswin Appollis, Bafana got off to a strong start. Just before halftime, Nkota’s strong shot shook the post, marking his closest moment of the first half.

At the half, coach Hugo Broos tried to inject additional attacking flare by bringing in Bathusi Aubaas and Thapelo Morena. In the second half, South Africa applied constant pressure, and Divine Lunga spectacularly cleared Lyle Foster’s attempt off the line.

When Zimbabwe’s captain, Knowledge Musona, was given a second yellow card in the 63rd minute, the visitors were forced to defend with 10 men, making their task more difficult. Late in the game, Foster struck the woodwork once more, and Bafana was unable to break the impasse despite having the numerical advantage.

The Warriors remained resilient, frustrating the host team right up until the last whistle, forcing South Africa to settle for a goalless draw.

Bafana Bafana will have to improve their qualifying campaign as a result of the outcome, while Zimbabwe will be proud of earning a hard-earned point away from home.
