Nigeria Wins 2-1 Over Lesotho to Increase Prospects of World Cup Qualification
Despite a late scare from Lesotho, goals from Troost-Ekong and Akor Adams sealed Nigeria’s hard-fought victory away.
Nigeria’s decisive 2-1 victory against Lesotho on Friday, which thwarted the hosts’ late comeback in a tense but important qualifier, bolstered their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In the 55th minute, captain William Troost-Ekong coolly converted a penalty kick following a defensive breakdown by Lesotho to end the first half goalless, despite the Super Eagles controlling possession but failing to generate clear chances.
After winning, Nigeria gained confidence, took control of the match, and pressed for a second goal. Striker Akor Adams completed a brilliant play in the 80th minute to double the advantage, giving the visitors a two-goal lead, demonstrating that their efforts were worthwhile.
Hlompho Kalake’s goal five minutes later gave the home crowd hope for a spectacular equalizer as Lesotho, who had shown little attacking danger for the majority of the game, roared back. All three points were maintained by Nigeria’s defense despite increasing late pressure.
For extended periods, the Super Eagles lacked intensity and unity, while Victor Osimhen struggled to find his best form in front of goal. It was by no means a vintage performance. The outcome, meanwhile, maintains Nigeria on track for their qualifying campaign.
