André Onan pays homage to Thomas Nkono, a legend
André Onana, the goalie for Cameroon, has respectfully denied that he is comparable to the famous goalkeeper Thomas Nkono, calling the former Indomitable Lions star one of the best goalkeepers in African and international football history.
The Manchester United player, who spoke with great respect, recognized Nkono’s enormous contribution to Cameroonian football while stressing that he still has a long way to go before achieving such legendary status.
“Am I on par with him? No, I don’t believe that. According to Onana, Thomas Nkono is among the greatest in the world, on the continent, and in our nation. Even just putting my name next to Thomas’s or comparing myself to him is remarkable. However, I don’t believe I am as good or as leveled as Thomas, who has done a lot for our nation.
As a two-time African Footballer of the Year and a World Cup hero for Cameroon in the 1980s and early 1990s, Nkono served as an inspiration to Onana and other goalkeepers around Africa.
The 28-year-old went on to say that his priorities are still having fun with the game and leaving his mark when the moment is right.
He said, “I just want to make a living, play football, and spend time with my friends and family.”
