Algeria qualifies for 2026 as the fourth African nation

Algeria became the fourth African team to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Round 9 qualifiers continued across the continent on Thursday.

In the early evening, the Fennec Foxes had to beat Somalia “away” in Oran in order to take first place in Group G. Mohamed Amoura scored two goals, and Riyad Mahrez scored the third.

Algeria will be going to their fifth World Cup in 2026. They have already been there four times, in 1982, 1986, 2010, and 2014. They are the fourth country in North Africa to get to North America after Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt.

In other games in Group G, Uganda beat Botswana 1-0 on the road in Francistown, thanks to a header from Jude Ssemugabi; Mozambique lost 1-2 at home to Guinea, moving them further behind Uganda for second place. The Syli National scored both goals through Abdoul Karim Traore.

Ayouba Kosiah, Mamadu Bah, and Edward Ledlum scored for Liberia in their 3-1 win over the Brave Warriors in the only Group H game played in Monrovia. The win cut Namibia’s lead to one point in the race for second place, behind already-qualified Tunisia.

Kenya beat East African neighbors Burundi 1-0 at the Intwari Stadium in Bujumbura in the only game in the afternoon. Early in the game, Bonfils Bimenyimana was sent off for the Swallows. Ryan Ogam scored a goal in the second half to give the Harambee Stars the win and move them up to third place in Group F.

Malawi and Equatorial Guinea were supposed to play in the early evening in Group H at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, but the game was pushed back.

On Friday, the last day of matches, Matchday 9, there are nine games. Teams like Senegal and Ivory Coast are trying to qualify, and South Africa and Nigeria are playing important games in Group C.
