Quansah departed from Liverpool in search of increased playing time

Jarell Quansah, an England defender, stated on Monday that he left Liverpool for Bayer Leverkusen in Germany in pursuit of greater playing time and a fresh challenge in a different setting.

Before agreeing to a five-year contract with the Bundesliga team, the 22-year-old made 58 appearances for Liverpool, but only four last season. He is included in the England squad for two games this month.

At a press conference held at St. George’s Park, Quansah stated, “I just wanted to keep progressing in a way where, as a young center back, you need games to improve.”

“It goes without saying that I’ve been studying from some of the top players at Liverpool at the time, and it has greatly benefited my career to be able to do so.

“But at this point in my career, I’m 22 turning 23 and I’m going to be needing hundreds of games to be where I want to be at the end of the day.”

Ever-present LEVERKUSEN

Quansah made his Bundesliga debut in a 2-1 victory over Hoffenheim and has been in every minute of Leverkusen’s nine games this season.

“It’s been good for myself to make that step and go abroad,” Quansah stated. “With world-class players everywhere on the field, it’s not guaranteed when you’re at a team like Liverpool.

“I just wanted somewhere where I know they can trust that I might make mistakes at times and I can develop under that and just keep pushing and keep pushing.”

Although Quansah has been chosen for five senior squads, he has not yet made his debut. He was a member of the England team that won the European Under-21 Championship in June.

“It is not a strange feeling, I’m really delighted to be here,” he stated. “Hopefully, it is something I will achieve, a cap for England.”

England will meet Latvia in a World Cup qualifying match on October 14 after hosting Wales in a friendly at Wembley on Thursday. If England wins and draws the match between Serbia and Albania, they will advance as group champions to the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
