Man United, Chelsea, and Liverpool all lose on a dramatic day
Manchester United and Chelsea lost 3-1 on Saturday, while Premier League winners Liverpool lost 2-1 against Crystal Palace in the eighth minute of extra time for the first time this season.
Brighton & Hove Albion defeated Chelsea, a 10-man team, at home after United faltered at Brentford and scored twice in stoppage time.
Erling Haaland’s late brace and two own goals helped Manchester City demolish Burnley 5-1, while Bournemouth’s 19-year-old Eli Junior Kroupi’s equalizer in extra time kept Leeds United to a 2-2 draw.
Another unexpected turn of events occurred at Tottenham Hotspur when Joao Palhinha equalized in the fourth minute of stoppage time to save a 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers, the team at the bottom.
Liverpool’s first defeat
Palace took the lead with a set-piece in the ninth minute after the ball dropped to Ismaila Sarr, who hammered it in, putting Liverpool behind early.
Without goalie Alisson, Liverpool would have given up more goals, and Jean-Philippe Mateta came close to making it 2-0 when he struck the post.
Even though Federico Chiesa gave Liverpool an equalizer in the 87th minute, Eddie Nketiah, a fellow substitute, added late drama by scoring the game-winning goal in the 97th minute. Selhurst Park celebrated again after VAR ruled that Nketiah was not offside.
“The boys are in really good form and think we can win every game and today we showed that,” Nketiah stated to the BBC.
Although Arsenal can move up to second position if they defeat Newcastle United on Sunday, Palace finished the day in second place, three points behind leaders Liverpool.
HAALAND GIVE MAN CITY WIN, OWN GOALS
Maxime Esteve of Burnley moved up to fourth place in the Premier League, becoming just the sixth player to score two own goals in a match.
Jaidon Anthony made it 1-1 with a shot that bounced off Ruben Dias after Esteve had taken the lead when he attempted to stop Phil Foden.
Esteve’s second own goal came as he attempted to stop Oscar Bobb from scoring, but Matheus Nunes’ close-range strike restored City’s lead.
Haaland gave Burnley their worst defeat of the season with two goals in the last minutes.
At Brentford, Manchester United loses.
The Brentford supporters welcomed Bryan Mbeumo back to his old team for the first time since he moved to Manchester United, but the cheers when the home team took a 2-0 lead in the first 20 minutes were even louder.
Jordan Henderson put Igor Thiago through on goal in the eighth minute, taking advantage of United’s high line. The Brazilian forward then scored his second goal when Altay Bayindir, the United goalie, mishandled a save directly into his path.
Benjamin Sesko’s first goal for United gave them a response, but Caoimhin Kelleher stopped Bruno Fernandes’ penalty kick before Mathias Jensen’s rocket from outside the box put the game out of reach in extra time.
“We played Brentford’s game; we had no influence over it. According to United manager Ruben Amorim, “we were really confused (on) second balls, first balls, and set pieces.”
“They were against us during the pivotal moments. difficult to lose again.
CHELSEA SEES RED ONCE MORE
When Trevoh Chalobah was sent off for denying Brighton a chance to score at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea had a player sent off for the second time in as many league games.
Chelsea had taken a 1-0 lead through a close-range header from Enzo Fernandez, but Chalobah’s red card in the 53rd minute left the home team with just 10 men, and Brighton made it matter when Danny Welbeck scored the equalizer to start the season.
Maxim De Cuyper’s header in the 92nd minute gave Brighton another goal, and Welbeck’s goal in the 10th minute of extra time gave the visitors the three points.
Antoine Semenyo’s free kick gave Bournemouth the lead at Leeds, but goals from Joe Rodon and Sean Longstaff each side of halftime gave the home team a 2-1 advantage.
In the 93rd minute, Kroupi volleyed in from inside the box to put Bournemouth in a three-team group with 11 points, just as Leeds was about to take three points.
By defeating Nottingham Forest 1-0 at the City Ground, Sunderland moved up to 11 points and fourth place, leaving Forest’s new manager, Ange Postecoglou, winless after five games in charge.
The difference between the two teams was Omar Alderete’s goal in the first half, with Sunderland putting up a fierce rearguard attack while Forest besieged their goal.
Wolves had their worst league campaign start ever, losing their first five games and coming within seconds of winning their first of the year.
Santiago Bueno’s tenacious goal early in the second half gave them the lead, but Palhinha’s incredible finish moved Tottenham to third place on goal differential.
