Remco Evenepoel of Belgium maintained his supremacy in time trials on Sunday, September 21, when he won the gold medal in the Men’s Individual Time Trial (ITT) for the third time in a row at the 2025 UCI Road World Championships in Kigali.

Evenepoel won his third consecutive ITT world title after winning in Glasgow in 2023 and Zurich in 2024. He finished the 40.6-kilometer circuit in 49 minutes and 6 seconds. At the Kigali Convention Centre (KCC), he finished with a decisive lead of one minute and fifteen seconds over second-place finisher Jay Vine of Australia.

Ilan Van Wilder, a fellow Belgian, placed third and unexpectedly won a bronze medal in his first-ever World Championship time trial competition.

Tadej Pogačar, the current world number one and winner of the Slovenian Tour de France, had a rough time on the tricky Kigali circuit. Just before the Women’s Foundation hard hill in Kimihurura, Evenepoel abruptly passed him, and he finished fourth, two minutes and 37 seconds behind him.

On Sunday, September 28, Pogačar is anticipated to make his comeback in the 267.5-kilometer road race.

Shemu Nsengiyumva of Rwanda started first and finished in 25th position, 6 minutes and 55 seconds behind the winner. Moïse Mugisha, a fellow Rwandan, finished 31st out of 54 riders.

South Sudanese athlete Edward Jalal finished last, 43 minutes and 18 seconds behind the leaders.

The Men’s and Women’s U23 ITT competitions will continue the 2025 UCI Road World Championships on Monday, September 22, in the streets of Kigali.
