Mourinho has a solid winning start at Benfica

The first game Jose Mourinho managed as manager of Benfica went well. His team beat AVS Futebol SAD 3-0, which was a win in the Primeira Liga.

Mourinho, who left Fenerbahce in Turkey last month, was hired as manager of Benfica on Thursday, one day after Bruno Lage was fired after a shocking 3-2 loss to Qarabag in the Champions League.

On the verge of halftime, Heorhiy Sudakov scored the first goal for Benfica. Vangelis Pavlidis and Franjo Ivanovic then sealed the win on Saturday.

The former manager of Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Manchester United was quick to calm people down after the win.

“Yesterday we worked for an hour and a half,” the 62-year-old said.

“First and foremost, I want to thank the players for being professional and loving the club. I also want to thank them for how they made me feel welcome and for supporting what we were working on.

“Certainly, it would have been a disaster in terms of points if we had lost.” Even though winning wasn’t great, it was the best thing we could have done. They needed to win after losing two points and a tough loss mentally.

“I told them after the game, it was good, but it was nothing extraordinary, hurry up, tomorrow there’s training in the morning.”

With thirteen points from five games, Benfica is in second place in the Portuguese top flight.
