Fernandes scores his 100th goal as Manchester United defeats Chelsea 2-1 in a thrilling match at Old Trafford
Manchester United defeated Chelsea 2-1 in a wild match at Old Trafford, with Bruno Fernandes scoring his 100th goal.
Bruno Fernandes, the captain of Manchester United, scored his 100th goal for the team in a thrilling 2-1 victory over Chelsea on Saturday, marking a historic night at Old Trafford.
The game, which took place in pouring rain, was the first in Premier League history to have two goals, red cards, and replacements in the first half. Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was sent off for hauling down Bryan Mbeumo outside the area, and Fernandes opened the score nine minutes later.
Just before halftime, Casemiro doubled United’s lead before getting sent off himself, leaving both teams with ten men. Despite a late header by Trevor Chalobah of Chelsea, United held firm to win their second league game of the year.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a minority owner, saw the victory, which moved Ruben Amorim’s team into the top half of the standings, two points outside the top four. After forcing a late save from Chelsea replacement goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, Fernandes, who was clearly wound up throughout, yelled at the Stretford End, calling for more raucous cheers from the home supporters.
With early substitutions and injuries, Chelsea’s evening became even more disorganized. Cole Palmer, a crucial forward, was forced off the pitch after exacerbating a groin issue. Sanchez was fired, and manager Enzo Maresca’s defensive reorganization backfired, leaving his team chasing the game.
Chelsea hasn’t won at Old Trafford since 2013 under Sir Alex Ferguson, and the victory prolonged that streak.
