Nigerian coach Chelle tells the NFF, “Pay me if you intend to fire me”

Eric Chelle, the head coach of Nigeria, has given a strong message to his employers in the face of rumors that the Nigeria Football Association (NFF) may soon fire him.

The 47-year-old tactician’s future as the Super Eagles’ coach is in doubt after the squad unexpectedly lost in the group round of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

In the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, West African powerhouses will play South Africa in Bloemfontein on September 9 and Rwanda in Uyo on September 6. Chelle has talked about his future with the NFF.

Many people have told me that they want to fire me and replace me with someone else. I am aware of that,” Chelle informed Osasu Obayiuwana.

“I am well aware that after just one game, I may be sacked. Football life is like this. They must be ready to pay the balance of my contract, though, if they choose to do so.

“Money was not the reason I traveled to Nigeria.” At my previous employment, my income was higher. This is a really large team, and I came to Nigeria in order to accomplish something and prove myself. This is where I came for the challenge. That hasn’t changed at all,” he continued.

Since taking over the team, I haven’t had much interaction with the NFF President and General Secretary. Naturally, we met right away and then again a few times after that. However, I have mostly been by myself as I continue to perform my duties.

Chelle, the former manager of MC Oran in Algeria, is being paid $50,000 (R880,000) a month to coach the Super Eagles.
