Semenyo: “When it counted most, football displayed its best side”

Antoine Semenyo, a forward for Bournemouth and Ghana, has expressed gratitude to supporters for their support after he was subjected to racial taunts during Friday’s 4-2 loss to Liverpool at Anfield.

The 25-year-old, who signed with the Cherries in 2023, heard racial comments during Friday’s first half of the Premier League game.

After being identified and taken out of the stadium after the incident, a 47-year-old Liverpool man was taken into custody on Saturday “on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence,” according to the BBC.

Following two goals from Semenyo in the second half, the visitors tied the score with Liverpool. However, late goals from Mohamed Salah and substitute Frederico Chiesa gave the Reds the victory.

The Ghanaian international thanked teammates, Liverpool opponents, and league authorities for their handling of the matter in an Instagram post after the game.

“The way the whole football family stood together last night at Anfield will always be a part of my memory, not because of one person’s remarks,” he remarked.

“I want to express my gratitude to my teammates from Bournemouth who stood with me at that difficult time, to the Liverpool players and supporters who displayed their genuine personalities, and to the Premier League officials who handled it with professionalism. At crucial moments, football displayed its best qualities.

It was like using the only language that really matters on the field to score those two goals. For times like this, for my teammates, and for everyone who thinks this lovely game can be, this is why I play.

“The overwhelmingly positive responses I’ve received from football fans around the globe serve as a reminder of why I like this game. Together, we keep going forward.

With three goals for The Black Stars, Semenyo has 27 caps for his country.
