Antoine Semenyo endures racial abuse and responds with determination and goals at the field
Antoine Semenyo, a forward for Bournemouth, was the target of racist taunts during Friday’s Premier League debut at Anfield against Liverpool. Play was temporarily stopped after the incident, which happened in the 29th minute of the first half, was reported directly to the referee by Semenyo.
In spite of the upsetting incident, the Ghanaian international, 25, responded admirably on the field. He scored twice in a 12-minute period in the second half, bringing the Cherries and the defending champions within a short distance of one another until Liverpool’s two late goals gave them a 4-2 triumph.
Following the game, Semenyo posted images of additional racial abuse he had encountered online to Instagram with the message, “When will it stop?” His remarks have led to new demands that social media companies and football authorities do more to combat racism online and at stadiums.
The whole football community has condemned the event, with many applauding Semenyo for his professionalism and fortitude in the face of such animosity.
