Players in Serie A will lose 25% of their earnings if relegated
The Italian Footballers’ Association and Serie A have made a new deal that will cut the pay of top Italian players by 25% if their teams are sent to Serie B.
Tuesday was the day that the five-year deal was made public.
The pay cut will apply to all contracts made after September 2, 2025, which is the last day of the transfer window. This is meant to help clubs that leave Serie A with their finances.
Under the new method, players’ salaries will automatically go down unless their contract says otherwise.
Agreements that are already in place will still be guided by their terms.
If a team is promoted back to Serie A, the pay of those who were affected will go back to what they were before.
The collective bargaining deal also sets a minimum wage for players based on their age that can’t be lowered, not even if the team is relegated.
