Tinubu and D’Tigress Celebrate Their Qualification for the Fifth Consecutive AfroBasket Final

Congratulations to D’Tigress on making it to the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket final for the fifth time, as announced by President Tinubu and his wife Oluremi.

President Bola Tinubu and his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, have congratulated Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, on their incredible accomplishment of defeating Senegal in a hard-fought game to advance to the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket final for the fifth time in a row.

With a historic 75-68 victory at the Palais De la Sport in Treichville, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, the defending champions have now defeated their Senegalese opponents for the seventh time. The president praised their tenacity and dominance in a statement released on Sunday by his adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

In addition to congratulating the team on winning “the final before the final,” President Tinubu also noted that they had already guaranteed a spot in the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualification competitions, which are set for March 2026.

“Throughout this tournament, I have witnessed D’Tigress’s discipline, focus, and team spirit—qualities that have brought honor to our nation and earned respect for our players and coaches worldwide,” the President said.

Rena Wakama, the team’s first female head coach, deserves special recognition for her leadership and experience, which continue to push D’Tigress to new heights in this very competitive sport, both on the court and now off it.

As D’Tigress looks to win their seventh AfroBasket overall and fifth in a row, President Tinubu promises his support.

Speaking in a message, the First Lady

expressed their congratulations to the D’Tigress National Basketball team for making it to the Afrobasket Tournament finals this year.

Mrs. Tinubu stated: “Your ten-year winning streak is admirable because it demonstrates your devotion, hard work, passion for the game, and dedication.”

“You truly inspire and make girls and women in general feel proud.”

We are grateful that you continue to fly the Nigerian flag.

When you enter the final match, I pray that God would reward your hard work and give you tremendous success.

All of us are waiting for you to return with the trophy.

I pray that the D’Tigress National Basketball team will be blessed. Happy Federal Republic of Nigeria!
