CAF gave in to Morocco’s demands and fired the director of referees

The head of refereeing for the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Désiré Noumandiez Doué, was fired after the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final, in which Nigeria won the title for the tenth time.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) filed a formal complaint and said there were “critical officiating errors” during the exciting final in Rabat. As a result, Doué was fired.

Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses blew a two-goal lead, but Nigeria beat the hosts 3–2.

It was up to Doué to choose the referees, even though he didn’t actually run the game.

The FRMF sent CAF a video dossier that showed a number of controversial decisions that they thought unfairly affected the result of the match.

Antsino Twanyanyukwa from Namibia handled the final with help from officials from Rwanda and Senegal. Salima Mukansanga from Rwanda was in charge of the video assistant referees.

The trouble began when Morocco wasn’t given what they thought was a clear penalty. They were furious that the Super Falcons were given what they called a “soft” punishment.
