Crystal Palace drag UEFA to CAS about relegation to the Conference League
Crystal Palace has appealed their relegation from the Europa League to the UEFA Conference League to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Even though the London team won the FA Cup the season before, they broke UEFA’s rules regarding multi-club ownership.
As of March 1, the European Football Organization determined that American businessman John Textor controlled or had influence over both Palace and French club Lyon.
Because of their higher league standing, Lyon was able to hold onto their Europa League ticket. However, UEFA rules forbid them from participating in the same European competition.
Forest, who finished seventh in the Premier League, will probably replace Palace in the second-tier Europa League if the fine is confirmed.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport confirmed receiving Palace’s appeal in a statement issued on Tuesday, and it promised to provide a decision by August 11 at the latest.
The CAS confirmed that Palace was trying to join the Europa League in place of Forest or Lyon.
Textor’s portion of Palace will be bought by Woody Johnson of the New York Jets, but the agreement was done too late to please UEFA.
