Riyad Mahrez, “Europe sometimes crosses my mind,” reveals

Riyad Mahrez, one of the most famous football players in Africa, has been open about his life after European football. He says he misses the high level of competition he used to love.

In his time with Manchester City, the Algerian winger won a lot of titles, including the UEFA Champions League, the Premier League, and the FA Cup. In 2023, he made the big move to Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League. Mahrez’s move to Saudi Arabia was part of a larger trend of top players following suit. He has now thought about the change and what he left behind.

“This does cross my mind sometimes,” Mahrez admitted. I play at a very high level because I love it. “Yes, I do miss it.”

It’s a rare sign of weakness from the smooth winger, who wowed fans in England and France with his dribbling skills, imagination, and ability to step up in big games. Mahrez made it clear, though, that he misses the energy and quality of European nights but is still fully committed to the path he is on now.

“But now that I’ve made up my mind,” he said, “I need to find challenge and motivation in Saudi Arabia.”

Mahrez has changed roles and is now an important part of Al-Ahli. He leads by example, inspires a growing fan base, and helps raise the level of the Saudi Pro League. It’s a different setting and there is less of a spotlight, but the responsibility may be even bigger.

Riyad Mahrez is making a new legacy that welcomes the unknown and seeks greatness beyond Europe’s borders. The Champions League anthem may no longer play in his head on midweek nights.
