Trump is at MetLife Stadium for the Club World Cup Final
Trump is under strict security at Metlife Stadium for Chelsea vs. PSG’s Club World Cup final.
On the first anniversary of the assassination attempt he escaped in Butler, Pennsylvania, US President Donald Trump made a high-profile public appearance on Sunday by traveling to MetLife Stadium to watch Chelsea vs. Paris Saint-Germain in the FIFA Club World Cup final.
About 35 minutes prior to kickoff, the 79-year-old Trump arrived by Marine One helicopter from his golf club in Bedminster, traveled to Teterboro Airport, and was then escorted by motorcade to the stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The president’s presence sparked stringent security measures, including a piece of bulletproof glass thought to be protecting him inside the arena, and was accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump, his son Donald Jr., and son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Trump was seen exiting the helicopter and getting into a security vehicle in video released by the White House Rapid Response account. The Athletic claims that Secret Service agents worked with tournament organizers to plan the route and logistics well in advance.
Later, Trump was spotted with FIFA President Gianni Infantino to watch the game. Woody Johnson, the owner of the New York Jets and soon-to-be co-owner of Crystal Palace, and Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, who previously owned the contentious Boeing 747-8 plane that Trump received, were both seen in the vicinity.
Trump suddenly appeared on screen during the playing of the national anthem, causing some audience members to jeer before the broadcast abruptly went away. This scene was captured by stadium cameras.
Trump is anticipated to go as a football enthusiast and to participate in diplomatic activities. On the margins of the event, the president will meet with senior Qatari officials, according to his Middle East Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, with conversations purportedly centered on a possible ceasefire in Gaza.
There will be additional logistical issues for the already heightened security operation since Trump is anticipated to participate in the trophy presentation ceremony after the final whistle.
