Mali Edge Tanzania; Banyana is off to a winning start

South Africa, the reigning champions, defeated Ghana in a decisive match on Monday at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), while Mali defeated Tanzania by a slim margin.

Banyana Banyana defeated the Black Queens 2-0 in a Group C match at the Honor Stadium in Oujda to get their WAFCON championship defense off to a strong start.

South Africa dominated the first half thanks to goals from Linda Motlhalo and Jermaine Seoposenwe, but they had to withstand a powerful second-stanza display from the West Africans, who twice struck the post and may have earned more for their energetic performance.

At the Berkane Stadium, Mali defeated Tanzania 1-0 in the second Group C match thanks to a goal by Saratou Traore in injury time just before halftime.

The Twiga Stars are still looking for their first Nations Cup victory, while the Female Eagles, who advanced to the semifinals in their most recent tournament debut in 2022, are tied with Banyana at the top of the rankings with three points.

On Wednesday, July 9, the WAFCON will resume with Group A matches between Zambia and Senegal in Mohammedia and DR Congo and tournament hosts Morocco in Casablanca.
