The Sudanese army pulls back from the border with Libya after saying Haftar attacked
The Sudanese army stated Wednesday that it had withdrawn from the Libya-Egypt-Sudan border triangle area, one day after accusing the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and forces loyal to Khalifa Haftar, the military commander of eastern Libya, of attacking.
Soldiers from Sudan, mostly from army-aligned former rebel groups, have been patrolling the area. The military of Sudan, which is engaged in a civil war with the RSF, claims that Haftar’s forces and the RSF use the corridor to supply weaponry. The region is near one of the primary frontlines of the conflict, the city of al-Fashir.
In a statement, the Sudanese army stated without providing any details, “Our forces today evacuated the triangle area as part of its defensive arrangements to repel aggression.”
Haftar’s forces claimed that forces affiliated with the Sudanese army had attacked Libyan patrols late on Tuesday, denying involvement in a cross-border assault.
One of Haftar’s supporters, the United Arab Emirates, is accused by Sudan of orchestrating the arms transfers, a claim the UAE disputes. The Sudanese army’s close ally Egypt supports Haftar as well.
