FIFA is considering extending the Club World Cup to 48 teams in 2029, the Guardian reports

The Guardian reports that FIFA will consult on the idea of increasing the number of teams in the Club World Cup to 48, beginning with the 2029 edition.

Major clubs from Europe that were deprived of this summer’s competition and its substantial prize money lobbied for the decision.

Several major clubs have failed to qualify for the Club World Cup, including Barcelona, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Milan.

The restriction on the number of clubs from a single nation may be lifted or loosened, according to several Premier League teams. This year, only two clubs are allowed to represent a league.

The Fifpro, the international players’ union, has been dissatisfied with the tournament’s launch in general and is likely to oppose any growth.
