Tanzanian musician Ibraah has revealed that she will be working with Kenyan genge icon Mejja on a music collaboration.
Speaking with Mzazi Tuva of Mseto East Africa, Ibraah disclosed that he was the one who made the initial contact and that a collaborative project is still ongoing without a specific release date in sight.
He made it clear that he was determined to find Mejja, having done so himself. This opens the possibility of future musical synergy by indicating a methodical and patient approach to well-known partnerships.
Since I was the one who approached him, I believe it’s communication because I’m still in contact with him.
Ibraah frames his transparency via a financial perspective, claiming that he has never turned down an artist’s request for collaboration. He sees music as an endeavor in which both sides must gain, guaranteeing support for the project’s success. He explained that occasionally he receives requests from musicians at a “incorrect time,” such as when he is preoccupied with project releases.
He clarifies that it’s a component of his work approach, even though it could be mistaken for arrogance.
“Music is business, so in my opinion, it’s not about rejecting someone. When you collaborate, you both need to have the heart to help that endeavor grow. Some arrive at the wrong moment. I might wish to publish a project. They are unaware that it is a person’s method of working,” Ibraah explained.
Ibraah attributed his successful music to three essential disciplines he followed before to entering the recording booth.
Responsibility Check: He starts by reminding himself that he is the family’s provider and that he is relied upon, making sure he stays away from what he called “foolish things.” This helps him stay focused on his goal.
Emotional Alignment: He aligns his feelings with the concept of the music. He makes sure to be in that “emotion” when singing a melancholy song in order to effectively communicate the message and the time period he wishes to describe.
Studio Comfort: Because “where people are, there must be snacks to energize them,” he insists on a cheerful studio setting with “things to eat” to “energize” everyone in attendance.
The Studio: A Center for Creativity Beyond Writing
Ibraah dedicates a significant amount of time to the studio, emphasizing a comprehensive creative process that goes beyond simple writing. He only works with people he trusts and has “a pure heart” with, placing a high value on “good sound” and “creating chemistry” with partners.
“First of all, from what I understand, music is a complex art form that requires both a good sound and the ability to work with people you trust to have a pure heart.”
According to him, music is a spontaneous flow of imagination that requires a positive attitude; a negative attitude might impede the creative process.
Ultimately, he spends his time “just creating things,” which includes everything from sound engineering to helping his songs have the proper emotional resonance and creative mood.
He stated that “you are not supposed to be in a bad mood while recording; music is also like imagination, it just happens.”
Ibraah, who was signed to Harmonize’s Konde Music Worldwide record label, is now a solo artist following a falling out with his previous management.
He first asserted that Harmonize had sought Tsh1 billion to end his contract, but Harmonize later denied the allegation, stating that he had released him with his blessings and without asking for payment.
