Kim Jong Un Assures Security Chief Shoigu of Unwavering Support for Russia

Kim Jong Un met with Sergei Shoigu, the secretary of the Security Council, and promised his full support for Russia’s position on Ukraine.

According to official media reporting on Thursday, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has vowed to steadfastly support Russia’s stance on the conflict in Ukraine and other significant international issues. The declaration comes after Kim and Sergei Shoigu, Russia’s Security Council secretary, met in Pyongyang on Wednesday.

KCNA, the Korean Central News Agency, reported that Kim reiterated North Korea’s pledge to support Moscow. The government of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea would continue to unwaveringly back Russia’s position and foreign policy, Kim Jong Un confirmed, according to the article.

Pyongyang and Moscow are strengthening their ties, particularly after a comprehensive treaty was signed during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s state visit to North Korea last year. The pact has a mutual defense clause that requires any country to provide quick military support in the event that the other country become the target of armed assault.

As reported by KCNA, Kim also conveyed North Korea’s resolve to “responsibly observe” the treaty’s provisions and talked with Shoigu about measures to further the strategic alliance and cooperation in a number of areas.

Foreign governments, especially those in the West who are concerned about the expanding military cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow, have expressed concern and attention to the two nations’ improved ties. Despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the growing isolation of both North Korea and Russia from most of the world, their partnership seems to be becoming stronger and more strategically linked.
