Israel Retrieves the Bodies of Two Hamas-Holded Hostages in Gaza
Israel has retrieved the bodies of Judi and Gad Haggai, two hostages who were detained in Gaza by Hamas.
The bodies of Judi Weinstein-Haggai and Gad Haggai, two hostages held by Hamas in Gaza, have been retrieved by Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed Thursday.
In the Gaza Strip’s Khan Younis neighborhood, the Israeli military said in a statement that the couple’s corpses were recovered during a special operation. In Israel’s continuous efforts to find and rescue Israelis kidnapped after Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack, the recovery represents a sobering development.
Israel reports that 56 captives are still in captivity after this most recent operation, with less than half of them thought to be alive.
The October 7 incident, in which Hamas-led militants killed almost 1,200 people and kidnapped 251 others, is when the hostage situation started, according to Israeli data. Over 54,000 Palestinians have been confirmed dead by local health officials as a result of Israel’s retaliatory military operation in Gaza in the months thereafter.
The humanitarian situation is still terrible, and the international community is still urging both parties to prioritize civilian safety and de-escalate the conflict.
