Chad Responds To Travel Ban By Suspending Visas To US Citizens

Chad has paused the granting of US visas, citing reciprocity and dignity, following its inclusion in the US travel ban.

A brave gesture demonstrating diplomatic reciprocity and national pride, Chad has stated that it would no longer be issuing visas to US citizens. The decision comes after Chadian nationals were added to a recent US travel restriction that affected 12 countries, which was announced by President Idriss Deby on Facebook on Thursday.

“I have given the government instructions to suspend issuing visas to US citizens in accordance with the principles of reciprocity,” Deby said.

The US travel ban has drawn protests from all over the continent, including from seven African nations. This is one of the most overt acts of retaliation that Chad has yet to take. President Deby emphasized Chad’s sovereignty and dignity while also recognizing the nation’s lacking material resources in comparison to other developed countries.

Deby said, referring sharply to Qatar’s alleged $400 million gift of an airplane to US President Donald Trump, “Chad has its dignity and pride, but it has no planes to offer, no billions of dollars to give.”

The ruling reflects the growing dissatisfaction of African countries with Western immigration policies that they believe to be discriminatory. Chad sees the suspension as a practical and symbolic statement that, despite its lack of economic power, it will not stand idly by while policies it believes to be unfair are implemented.

As global responses continue to develop, Chad’s conduct reflects a growing call for reciprocity and respect in international diplomatic interactions.
