Taiwo Awoniyi of Nigeria is in a coma after surgery

Taiwo Awoniyi, a striker for Nottingham Forest and Nigeria, suffered a catastrophic injury against Leicester City on Sunday and was put in a medically induced coma after surgery.

In the 87th minute of Forest’s 2-2 draw at the City Ground, Awoniyi was trying to retrieve a cross from teammate Anthony Elanga when he collided with the goalpost, resulting in a burst intestine, according to the BBC.

Ibrahim Sangare was replaced by Awoniyi in the 83rd minute. He was treated on the field after the incident, but he made an effort to play even though he was clearly uncomfortable.

On Monday evening, the 27-year-old was brought to the hospital and had surgery. According to the BBC, he is still in the hospital but is making good progress.

Since joining Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin in 2022, the Nigerian national has made 27 appearances in Premier League games this season.
