Strange World: Eco-Friendly Beer Made From Urine

Scientists at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) gathered 20,000 liters of the aqueous liquid from portaloos erected for the annual Christian holiday of Walpurgis Night, which takes place on April 30 and May 1.

Prior to being transformed into a fertilizer that can be applied to 1.5 hectares of arable land by a research firm, the gallons of urine were sent to SLU, where 95% of the water was extracted.

Moreover, beer enthusiasts will be able to enjoy the beer produced in 2027 from malting barley that has been planted on land fertilized by the urine of Walpurgis Night celebrations people.

Three weeks ago, the urine we collected a year ago was utilized on a Gotland field where malting barley is produced, according to Björn Vinnerås, professor of cycle technology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

“This amounts to roughly three football fields, which is a start, but not much from an agricultural standpoint.”
