India prohibits imports from Pakistan in light of escalating tensions following the killings of tourists

India said on Saturday that it would not accept any goods going from or passing through Pakistan. It also said that it would not allow any Pakistani ships to enter the country. This comes after a deadly attack on tourists in the disputed Kashmir region, which has made things more tense between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

In a notice, India’s Directorate General of Foreign Trade said that the ban would start right away.

“This restriction is imposed in the interest of national security and public policy,” it stated.

Last week, terrorists are thought to have killed at least 26 people at a mountain tourist spot in the Pahalgam area of the Kashmir valley.

Indian and Pakistan both claim the Muslim-majority Himalayan area. It has been the site of several wars, an uprising, and diplomatic stalemates.

India says that Pakistan was involved in the attack, but Islamabad rejects this. Pakistan has said that it has “credible intelligence” that India is planning to start a war.

As a response, Pakistan has stopped all trade across the border, blocked Indian airlines from its airspace, and kicked out Indian officials.

It has also said that any action taken to stop the flow of river water promised in a deal from decades ago would be seen as an act of war.

Pakistani-flagged ships would not be able to visit any Indian ports on Saturday, and Indian-flagged ships would not be able to visit any Pakistani ports.

The Directorate General of Shipping said in a statement, “This order is issued to ensure the safety of Indian assets, cargo, and connected infrastructure.” This is for the general good and for the benefit of Indian shipping.

Not as much trade goes between the two countries these days.
