The ICC wants to make money off of cricket in Africa
The International Cricket Council (ICC) wants to gather enough money to commercialize cricket across the African continent.
At the ICC Africa Conference, which concluded over the weekend in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, this was one of the main topics covered.
More than 19 representatives from African member countries attended the two-day session. General Manager Emmanuel Byiringiro and President Stephen Musaale represented the Rwanda Cricket Association.
Byiringiro gave Times Sport a briefing on the conference’s events, stating that the ICC wants to implement ways to monetize cricket because it does not generate much revenue on the African continent.
“ICC is looking for broadcast partners for events like the T20, among others. Additionally, they hope to sponsor the game by enlisting corporate entities, Byiringiro told Times Sport.
“The 2027 ICC World Cup, which will be hosted in South Africa and Zimbabwe, was one of the other topics discussed on the agenda,” he said.
There was also talk on utilizing cricket’s inclusion at the Olympics.
Byiringiro stated that “plans are underway to have a successful tournament because it is an all Africa World Cup” with reference to the 2027 ICC World Cup.
