A small plane crashes in a muddy field close to the New York–Massachusetts border, killing one person
One person was killed in a small plane crash in Copake, New York, when snow and muck hindered emergency response.
Authorities in Copake, a rural town about 50 miles south of Albany, New York, confirmed that a small plane carrying six people crashed on Saturday afternoon, killing at least one person.
The Mitsubishi MU-2B plane crashed in a muddy field close to the Massachusetts state boundary at 12:15 p.m. (1715 WAT) on its way to Columbia County Airport, which is close to Hudson, New York, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
As investigators continue to examine the scene, it is unknown if the collision caused any additional injuries or fatalities.
During a press conference, Columbia County Undersheriff Jacqueline Salvatore stated that the terrain and weather were posing serious obstacles to emergency response efforts.
“Accessibility is challenging because it’s in the middle of a field and quite muddy,” she said.
The FAA and the Sheriff’s Office anticipate that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will assume responsibility for the investigation and offer additional information on Sunday.
