After twenty years, the Unity Cup is back, and Brentford’s Gtech Stadium will host Trinidad & Tobago, Ghana, Jamaica, and Nigeria.
Final agreements to confirm the participation of Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago in the highly anticipated Unity Cup 2025 Invitational Tournament were reached on Wednesday, and the event will take place later this May at the Gtech Community Stadium in Brentford, West London.
The week-long football and cultural event will take place at the 17,250-seat stadium, which will host the competition for the first time in more than 20 years.
AfroSport’s Rotimi Pedro expressed his excitement over the tournament’s resuscitation. “We are pleased to revive the Unity Cup. Reviving this significant community event has taken a lot of work, and we’re thrilled that Unity Cup 2025 will provide top-tier international football to African and Caribbean football fans once more,” he said.
“We appreciate Brentford FC for giving us a home at the Gtech Community Stadium, and we look forward to what many people who attended past Unity Cup competitions still consider to be a cultural event after 20 years. With a focus on top football players from our home countries, Unity Cup 2025 is a week-long celebration of our intertwined cultures through cuisine, music, and comedy.
The first semi-final of the competition, the first-ever “Trini-Jam” match to occur on British soil, pits Trinidad & Tobago against Jamaica on Tuesday, May 27. The focus will switch to a traditional African derby on Wednesday, May 28, when three-time African champions Nigeria and four-time champions Ghana square off in a high-stakes match that will prolong their 74-year rivalry.
All four teams will take the field again on Saturday, May 31st, for the grand finale. The Unity Cup Final, where the winners will be announced, will come after the third-place play-off.
Ahead of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau emphasized the importance of the competition. “We agreed to participate in the tournament because it provides a crucial chance for our team to strengthen its bonds before the FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September.” The Super Eagles have always played a part in the unique history of the Unity Cup.
“We’re excited to participate in the Unity Cup as it will allow us to try out a few new players in various roles, helping us to strengthen our squad before the matches in September and October,” said Eric Chelle, head coach of the Super Eagles.
“This is a great tournament for us to reunite and continue strategizing for the upcoming World Cup qualifying games,” said team captain William Troost-Ekong.
Former Jamaican international and Brentford FC ambassador Marcus Gayle praised the event’s comeback. “We are overjoyed to host the Unity Cup at Gtech Community Stadium and to welcome it back.” In addition to showcasing the best football players from Africa and the Caribbean, this tournament will honor the close cultural and athletic ties that exist between these two regions. We’re thrilled with the entertainment and sense of community the tournament offers, and it’s a fantastic stage for athletes to shine.
