“Disappointing people is the issue that we ladies battle with. People couldn’t even comprehend that I was making a decision for myself this year, she said.

People immediately believed that Michelle and Barack were divorcing, the 61-year-old said. “A mature lady couldn’t be making these choices on her own, could she? However, society treats us that way,” Michelle continued.

She said it was disheartening to see women branded as something bad and awful if they didn’t conform to a particular norm.

Michelle considered her life after leaving the White House and the increased independence she had been enjoying since her children, Malia and Sasha, grew up before putting an end to the divorce rumors.

For the first time in decades, the mother of two prioritizes her own objectives and finds satisfaction in taking care of herself. “It’s the first time in my life all of my choices are for me,” she stated to President Bush.

Michelle went on to say that in the past, she would avoid making some decisions by citing her girls or her role as First Lady.

“I believe that I could have made many of these choices years ago if I were being honest with myself. However, I didn’t provide myself that liberty,” she remarked.

Michelle is putting an end to the divorce rumors, but Barack has also said that marriage is difficult, particularly when it is being scrutinized by the public.

On April 3, 2025, he talked with Hamilton College President Steven Tepper about the difficulties of their 33-year marriage.

The former president jokingly acknowledged that the responsibilities of his job had left him in a “deep deficit” with Michelle.

“So I have been trying to dig myself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things,” he explained.
