Gen. Muganga attends a combined EAC-SADC meeting on the DR Congo conflict in Harare

In Harare, Zimbabwe, on Sunday, March 16, Rwandan Defense Force (RDF) Chief of Defense Staff Gen. Mubarakh Muganga attended a meeting of senior officials from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC) to review the agenda of a ministerial meeting on the conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that was scheduled for Monday.

As the conflict between the Congolese government and the M23 rebels escalated in February, the Joint Meeting of the Chiefs of Defense’s report on the ceasefire, cessation of hostilities, and creation of a Technical Coordination Mechanism at the Secretariat level to oversee the implementation of the decisions made at the Joint Summit was on the agenda.

Special Operations Force Commander and Head of Defense Intelligence Brig Gen Stanislas Gashugi joined Gen Muganga.

Two days prior, in Nairobi, Kenya, the EAC ministers of foreign affairs and defense met with top officials to discuss technical assistance for the EAC-SADC peace process and the roadmap for restoring peace and stability in eastern DR Congo.
