DR Congo: Mass ethnic murders in Ituri are carried out by militias.
According to reports, 21 tribes in Ituri have been compelled by the increasing violence to band together and create a political organization for self-defense. Being polite..
Alarms have been raised by a wave of ruthless murders in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, where militias are raging across the province of Ituri, killing people.
A video that is making the rounds on the internet depicts horrific atrocities committed by Congolese militias, underscoring the escalating humanitarian situation.
Numerous violent groups have made Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo their home, endangering not just Congolese nationals but also those in nearby nations.
Among these is the FDLR, a terrorist group established by those responsible for the Rwandan Genocide against the Tutsi in 1994. Another is the militant organization known as the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which has carried out several terrorist assaults in Uganda.
According to reports, 21 tribes in Ituri have been compelled by the increasing violence to band together and create a political organization for self-defense.
In an effort to defend their towns against what they see as official incompetence and militia violence, seven armed militias from the area have formed a united high command.
The newly formed alliance has decided to take matters into its own hands since it sees no other option. Their aim to target the Congolese army (FARDC) and affiliated militias has been indicated.
The most recent executions highlight the nature of the continuing conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the M23 rebel organization is being fought by Congolese military forces in cooperation with other armed groups.
The death of innocent people in eastern DR Congo, especially among the Kinyarwanda-speaking populations they are fighting for, has repeatedly alarmed M23.
Regional organizations like the EAC and SADC have attempted to address the problem, but appeals for a diplomatic settlement have been ignored since the Kinshasa administration appears to be more interested in a military solution.
The issue has gotten worse as a result, with M23 moving into South Kivu and claiming to have taken over Bukavu and Kavumu Military Airport.
The deployment of Ugandan military was halted.
Last Monday, the Ugandan government was granted permission by the Kinshasa administration to send the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) to Bunia in an attempt to establish a long-term solution.
Communities were left unprotected, meanwhile, as the Kinshasa administration unexpectedly halted the operation at the last minute, according to reports.
President Yoweri Museveni and Lt. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Commander of Land Forces, have responded by voicing their grave concerns about the violence and Kinshasa’s inability to safeguard its citizens.
“Kinshasa has shown itself incapable or unwilling to defend them,” according to people with knowledge of the matter. “They have refused to intervene on behalf of the UPDF while innocent people are being killed.”
Fears of a major humanitarian catastrophe are growing as the situation in Ituri progressively worsens. Mass murders, displacement, and ethnic targeting are being reported, but Kinshasa is mostly keeping quiet.
As his nation descends more into anarchy, President Félix Tshisekedi, who visited Germany this week, is intent on making diplomatic contacts.
