Egypt mobilizes the Arab world against Trump’s plan for Gaza
Egypt announced on Friday that it has communicated with Arab allies like as Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates to reaffirm the region’s opposition to Palestinians being displaced in any way after U.S. President Donald Trump stated that they should leave Gaza.
A statement stated that Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty had communicated with counterparts from eleven other countries.
These included “the constants of the Arab position on the Palestinian cause, rejecting any measures aimed at displacing the Palestinian people from their land, or encouraging their transfer to other countries outside the Palestinian territories,” it stated.
Trump has proposed that the United States re-establish a “Riviera of the Middle East” by claiming Gaza from Israel and relocating Palestinians to Egypt and Jordan. A two-state solution, however, with Israel and a distinct Palestinian homeland, is what Arab countries desire.
According to Egypt’s statement, relocating Palestinians would constitute a “flagrant violation of international law, an infringement on Palestinian rights, a threat to security and stability in the region and an undermining of opportunities for peace and coexistence among its peoples.”
Instead, Egypt and other Arab countries were examining ways to clean up and restore Gaza after Israel’s military operation devastated the strip in reaction to the cross-border attack on Israel by Palestinian terrorist group Hamas on October 7, 2023.
Although there were differences on how to react, Egyptian intelligence, the military, and the president all agreed to oppose Trump’s plan, Egyptian security sources told Reuters as much.
Egyptians will demonstrate against the relocation of Palestinians, according to President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
A key ally of the United States in the area, Egypt assisted in mediating the truce in Gaza between the United States and Qatar.
