Suluhu and Mwinyi are endorsed by Tanzania’s ruling party as presidential contenders for the general elections in 2025
The ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party in Tanzania approved a resolution on Sunday designating Hussein Ali Mwinyi as the party’s official candidate for the Zanzibar presidential election and Samia Suluhu Hassan as its nominee for the Union presidential election.
Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, the former president of Tanzania from 2005 to 2015, made the suggestion that led to the resolution.
The decision was made with resounding support from delegates at the CCM National Congress, which was held in Dodoma, Tanzania.
Kikwete’s address was interrupted by shouts and clapping as delegates screamed their support for Hassan and Mwinyi as he made the suggestion.
Kikwete sparked another wave of applause when he stated, “We have the authority to decide today that Samia is our candidate and Mwinyi is our candidate.”
Nonetheless, he warned against circumventing the legal system and implored Congress to guarantee that the nomination procedure continues to be legally sound.
The president and National Assembly members will be chosen in Tanzania’s general elections, which are scheduled for October 2025.
