For the second consecutive year, “Last Christmas” tops the UK Christmas charts
Andrew Ridgeley claims that George Michael would have been “overwhelmed” by the success of “Last Christmas.”
Together with George, who passed away on Christmas Day in 2016 at the age of 53, the 61-year-old vocalist rose to popularity in the 1980s as a member of the band Wham!, and their upbeat song has taken the top spot for Christmas for the second time.
He said to Official Charts.com: “It takes 37 years to reach Number 1, 39 years to reach Christmas Number 1, and then they all appear at once like London buses! I am especially happy for George, who would have been overjoyed. His wonderful Christmas composition has become a classic, and it is now almost as synonymous with Christmas as turkey, mince pies, and pigs in blankets.
Andrew praised everyone who helped propel the record to the top of the charts once more, stating that the music’s ongoing appeal is “testament” to the song itself.
According to him, it’s evidence of a truly amazing Christmas song that, in the eyes of many, conjures and symbolizes Christmas as we all want it to be. I want to express my gratitude to everyone who has shared history by listening to, downloading, purchasing, and streaming Last Christmas. Merry Christmas and many thanks!
When “Last Christmas” was first released in 1984, it reached five weeks in a row at number two in the UK singles chart. Geldof’s Band Aid song “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” included George and kept it from reaching the top spot at Christmas.
Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and Meghan Trainor are just a few of the numerous musicians that have covered the song throughout the years.
