China and India promise to end their standoff over the Himalayan border in 2020
China and India are going to try to settle their border conflict in a “fair and reasonable” way.
China and India agreed on Wednesday to try to settle their long-running border dispute in the Himalayas. This comes after a military standoff that began with a deadly fight in 2020.
This change comes after an agreement was made between the two Asian powers in October about border patrols. This ended a standstill that started with the conflict in the Ladakh area. This fight was the first one between India and China that ended in death since 1975, which made things much worse.
After talks between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, who are the two countries’ special representatives on border issues, China’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that both sides would try to find “fair and reasonable” solutions and make a plan to deal with easier issues first and then more difficult ones.
After they agreed on the border in October, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met for the first time in five years.
According to the Chinese statement, Wang and Doval pushed for the border patrol deal to stay in place and said that the two countries would improve cross-border exchanges, such as Indian pilgrims going to Tibet again.
